Wet Saturday morning walk!

MMMMMmmmm October already?  Just back from a long walk in the rain (over an hour) with the big dogs, all of us soaked through to the skin .... but refreshed and happy enough. I've got that smug 'got that over with' feeling, as I am a sucker for the doggy look saying "walk me please?" Nice warm shower for me and a rub down with a towel for the girls! Time for breakfast me thinks.... then no doubt it'll be time to start all over again with the pups. Still I would not change a thing, seems incredible that this time next Saturday we will be getting the pups ready to go to their new families. Aaaah!

Being a dog owner isn't all about walks in the sunshine... it is about damp smelly dogs who get your floors (and walls) dirty as they come in from the garden. It's about going out in all weathers .... and you should treat it as an adventure and the dogs right to exercise and stimulation rather than a chore so they go to the loo. I loved this morning in the rain, admittedly with the wind at my back. I discovered a new meadow flower I hadn't seen before, heard a woodpecker and watched young robins on the path in front of me. Bella and Maya had an amazing time bouncing through the meadow grass, getting soaked through and pouncing on each other like puppies themselves. Yes I could have had an extra hour in bed, but I would have missed so much. The dogs are all sleeping now, and my skin feels great after the rain.

I will put up some more puppy pics from the last few days when I have time. Now it's time for my shower!

The pups are spending almost all their waking moments outside!

Our garden is on different levels and for several days there was only one curious and able pup who found her way up, but it does look a long way down! Jumping is not advisable for young bones so I've been on my guard to lift brave Miss Orange back down. But now they're all finding their way up we opened up the steps to make it easier for them all - and safer!

Here they are getting to know the big doodles and being very brave....

Big Auntie Maya is actually a very gentle soul but she has a fierce warning bark if they should come too close, yet these fearless little doods come back again and again!

Hey it's a jungle out there!

We are starring in our own Facebook page now so check us out on

When the little pups get tired, I mean they are barely six weeks old, some just stop what they're doing and sleep right where they are.... see little Finlay here
whereas some of the others take themselves back indoors to their sleeping crate and curl up for a doze. Often there's one or two still play fighting long after all the others though! Boys will be boys!

Let's get busy busy!

How quickly things change! From a quick outing outside just last week we seem to spend hours out there now! No problem except that we seem to have missed summer completely..... why the cold, damp and windy weather? Not that the pups mind.

Toilet training is going well, taking the pups out as soon as they wake in the morning, and after every feed. It just came naturally to them and they are pretty much using the paper in their toilet area when inside too. Thankfully they sleep in the crate from about 11pm til 6.30 to 7am, using their newspaper covered toilet area. I say pretty much..... if we should stay in bed an extra few minutes we are rewarded with armageddon! Nobody needs that first thing, not before a coffee!

Anyhow, what goes in must come out. I used to mix the puppy food with welpi at the start, and then I was grinding the kibble with hot water, waiting for it to cool and absorb the water when I found a little pup happily eating the adult dogs dry food! Did I need to be trying so hard? No of course not, so now the pups are fed four meals of puppy kibble, moistened with water and even some dried kibble to finish. No problems at all! Those little teeth are enjoying chewing the food, and anything else they can find. We have learned to wear shoes at all times as they are partial to toes!

Bella does still feed them several times a day, but it looks so uncomfortable now as she stands up and they literally hang, pushing each other aside. Not my idea of fun!

They all chase Bella round whenever they see her and she has to keep her wits about her to avoid constantly nursing. They are all drinking water from a bowl and eating well so they don't really need her milk so much anymore. I will weigh them again tomorrow as they turn 6 weeks but I know they are all little heavyweights now. Only one dainty girl, Turquoise collar, is able to squeeze through the bars of the play pen now and she turns up at odd moments looking for us or Bella, she doesn't mind which!

We have introduced a play pen into our kitchen and put cardboard boxes and clean plastic milk cartons in to play with and chew, as well as the teething rings and balls. The very best toys are the puppies themselves of course, they are so amusing to watch as they wrestle and pounce and chew each others tails, ears, legs etc. The little growls and squeals can get quite noisy. They watch and respond to every movement we make and only sleep for shorter periods of time.

Each pup has its own personality now and love cuddles and attention and our family gives them lots of both. We have lots of visitors coming to see the pups and friends and neighbours pop in too.

I have lots of pics of the puppies playing outside and will put them up later. We seem to fit our lives in around puppy feeds, visits from prospective families, work etc. I'm off to our allotment now or we'll have no crops to harvest come the autumn. Just off to find a coat now. Summer, what summer?

The world just gets bigger and bigger

Another gorgeous afternoon and this time we decided to take the pups outside......lovely for us all! It meant I could clean their pen out without their help, and they could see a bit more of this wonderful world. They LOVED exploring ..... of course with Bella out there too all they really wanted to do was suckle and poor Bella had to keep moving or she would have them all hanging, literally!

After about 10 minutes we noticed one after another was finding a quiet place to lie down and go to sleep in. So cute.

All in all we are so-o enjoying the pups, they change so quickly, from those first tentative steps to running full pelt around the patio in just a week and a half!

And as you can see they are LOVED by the whole family. Their teeth are just emerging and we all know what that means! They are absolutely loving the puppy porridge now - less liquid and more to chew. It's so important that the puppies experience as much as possible from now so that they become confident in all things. So far so good...

Here's what the puppies are up to on this lazy sunday afternoon! Sleeping! All except little miss Turquoise!
Look out for Mr Blue in the back corner in true doodle pose.

As you can see we have extended the pen and attached the crate so they can sleep there and play in the pen. Hopefully if new families choose to crate train their pups then at least they will be used to it already. (I thoroughly recommend using a crate with small puppies.)

The little ones are already leaving the sleep area to empty their bowels, and most of them urinate on the paper too. I love watching them try to balance on their back legs in "straining pose" and how the other pups show no respect and play fight all around them, often knocking them off balance. I now spend much of my time poop scooping and scouring the neighbourhood asking for old newspapers!

Each one of the little tykes now weighs over 3lb! The biggest pup at birth is still the biggest, Lilac collar male and he is half an ounce off 4lb. They are all eating the puppy soup well and even sipping water from a bowl too. Bella asks to go in with the pups 4 or 5 times a day but is spending her nights back in her own bed. They are all growing up. So soon...
